Aurinkolahti Comprehensive School
The
Aurinkolahti Comprehensive School is located in the Helsinki district
of Vuosaari. The school has classes from preschool to the ninth grade.
The school facility is comprised of two buildings: Auringonpilkku and
Aurinkokoulu.
Auringonpilkku was completed in 2001.
Auringonpilkku houses the preschool and grades 1 and 2. A daycare
centre also operates in the building.

Aurinkokoulu
(Main building) was completed in 2002. The school design is based on
the winning entry in an architectural competition. The main building
houses grades 3-9. The school’s open, three-storey atrium serves as a
lounge area, cafeteria and theatre, depending on the need.

An
observatory tower rises above the school grounds, floor-to-ceiling
windows provide ample light inside and the “Prisma” light installation
creates rainbows.
Our area of emphasis is on technology
education and cognitive skills. State-of-the-art information and
communications technologies are used in all subjects. Information and
communications technologies are used in a wide variety of applications,
whenever appropriate to the subject matter in question. Students are
taught to be critical in the use of technology.

Technology
education teaches children and youths to understand their environment
in an increasingly technology-intensive world. Intelligent curiosity
and a personal desire to experiment are supported in many ways. Studies
prepare the student for a life, in which technology is both an everyday
tool and something fascinating to be developed.

Cognitive
skills are taught by means of systematic programmes. Cognitive learning
programmes are based on neurocognitive learning approaches, according
to which cognitive sub-areas can be exercised both in groups and
individually. We use the Bright Start programme in our preschool and
the first two grades. The IE (Instrumental Enrichment) programme begins
in the third grade. Exercises begin with self-regulation and move on
to, for example, comparison, classification, logical progression,
spatial orientation, etc.
